Feeder Pillars

By John Dugdale at 2013-10-08 01:52:34

An enclosed electrical distributor that can provide low voltage electrical services and distribution is known as a feeder pillar. They're connected to domestic and street lighting applications and are linked to the main distribution board of the city's electricity supply. In some areas, they're also used to house the connections that provide power to gated communities and townships, housing-societies and condos and also in industrial power requirements. Feeder pillars are also used in telephone systems, fuse holders and links. Many large manufacturers of feeder pillars offer customized solutions for individual power supply or other requirements.

Feeder pillars are usually constructed out of steel sheets and mounted on a strong steel base of a defined thickness. The entire unit consists of an instrument panel, incoming and outgoing units, busbars, power transformers and the enclosure itself. The structure should be sturdy, resistant to environmental damage, be able to withstand all kinds of weather conditions and also resist vandalism. It should have security features that allow it to be operated only by authorized personnel.

Steel is usually the material that's used for manufacturing feeder pillars. Apart from the fact that stainless steel is less conductive than other metals and hence a much safer material to use in such applications, steel is also one of the toughest materials. It can withstand long exposure to the elements and with regular coats of paint and anti-rust it is one of the most durable materials available for outdoor applications. Depending on the norms designated by the main power distribution authority, feeder pillars may either be left in a natural steel finish or they may be powder-coated in designated colors. For instance, in the USA, feeder pillars are painted unobtrusive or neutral gray or beige, while in some European countries like Germany, they may be brightly colored and decorated.

Some of the important features to be kept in mind while selecting the right feeder pillars are: whether you require detachable or hinged doors, ease of installing, inspecting and maintaining them by trained personnel, design that provides adequate sheltered canopy, roof or top, weather-proof material and coatings especially for outdoor installations, pilfer/tamper proof locking systems, secure installation using the right kind of supports, good quality rust-proof and weather resistant hinges, clamps, struts and cables, adequate earthing facilities, shock-proof design with the use of rubber gaskets for good sealing and adequate warranties and guarantees from the manufacturers. Many feeder pillar designs also provide the space for the electricity-board's meters, cut-out systems and mini distribution board.

Based on your individual needs, budget and requirements you can select the best type of feeder pillar from the retail outlets of reputed manufacturers or purchase them on-line.
